December 2022

Friends and Family of W10,
The holiday season has come again.  We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving with those that bring joy to your life.  We appreciated spending time with our family but, as always, the time was too short.  We face this holiday with broken hearts and spending time with others we love seems to make the days a bit brighter.  As you gather with your friends and family this holiday season, be sure they know how much you appreciate them and don't ever miss the opportunity to be kind.

Saturday Social @ W10
December's social will be this Saturday, December 3rd at 10 am at the Seabiscuit bakery.  After the social we encourage folks to visit the Cultus Bay Glass Art Gallary and the Mukilteo Coffee Roaster's Mercantile shop.  If you're in a shopping mood - check out the W10 merch at the end of this newsletter.

SAVE THE DATE
December 17th, 2022 at 7p.m.
Nick and Annie Mah are sponsoring a fundraiser for the Middle Crawford Road Association (MCRA).  Like W10, Crawford road is also privately owned, public use.  Besides helping MCRA, this is a great opportunity to help Nick and Annie as they pursue their goals of reopening the former Roaming Radish space and once again giving the community a fabulous place to gather, drink and eat.  Rumor is they may put together a W10 signiture drink too.

Instructors Corner
We were fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Brad Shuster, our new AOPA regional representative.  We first met him at the WSCAA conference in Leavenworth and shortly thereafter he came up to visit W10.  We filled his ears up with our political concerns and how AOPA can continue to support W10.  As much as we enjoyed his visit, Brad was also here checking in on Fred and the South Whidbey Flying club.  Fred is a volunteer for the ASN (Aviation Safety Network).  This visit resulted in a Brad writing a wonderful article in the Northwest Mountain Region newsletter.  Click here to read the article.
If you have questions related to aviation, or if you have any suggestions about other educational opportunities, you can reach Dave Bennett at [email protected].
Ground School @ W10
Ground school is on the home stretch for this group of students.  The practice tests are just around the corner.  But, don't worry, just because the official classes may be winding down, it doesn't mean you have to quit learning and Dave, Tom, Fred or any of our local pilots are here to answer your questions.  One obvious reason to attend ground school is on those special occassions Dave may bring in some insanely yummy cheesy rolls. Please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] for further information if you would like to attend ground school!
Proceeds go directly to Whidbey Airpark (W10) to help cover maintenance, improvements, future programs, and facilities.
Great Loss in Our Flight Test and Aviation CommunityI wanted to share a poem in honor of David Newton and Scott Brenneman, our good friend Nate Lachendro and our very own Nathan Precup.   "In Memoriam" by William MorecombFor a second you were flying
Like you always wanted to
Now you’ll fly forever
In skies of azure blue
We’ll see your smile in every ray
Of sunshine after rain
And hear the echo of your laughter
Over all the pain
The world’s a little quieter now
The colours have lost their hue
The birds are singing softly
And our hearts are missing you
Each time we see a little cloud
Or a rainbow soaring high
We’ll think of you and gently
Wipe a tear from our eye.

Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club
Keep an eye out for a little Cessna 150, named Scarlett, taking off with a future pilot in the left seat. Scarlett is a dream maker, career builder, and a source of pure joy for many people so W10 feels privileged to be called her home. Of course, what is Scarlett without Fred Lundahl, founder of the South Whidbey Flying Club.

If you are interested in aviation and would like to know more about learning to fly or about the South Whidbey Flying Club, contact Fred Lundahl via [email protected].
