Hello, Friends and Family of W10! Is it really time for July to begin? Our summer months seem to fly by so quickly. There is so much to do around the field when the weather is nice. It's certainly slow going but we took a weekend to continue clearing the large stumps out of the area where the future FBO is going. In order to do this you may notice a couple new pieces of equipment that is making W10 it's new home. Both came from the 1980's but the large new Catepillar excavator and the John Deere bulldozer will be helping with the dirt moving and land clearing as well as any other unusual project that needs done around here. As a reminder, the firepits are open if you want to camp or just have a picnic while watching planes come and go. Saturday Social @ W10 This Saturday, July 1st, is our monthly social. For those that can make it, we'll meet at 10am at Seabiscuit Bakery. We look forward to seeing you! W10 Political Update Between holidays and traveling there is not much new to report. We will still try to pursue our quest for airport protections from incompatible use as best as we can. For those of you that may not have heard, the Port of Coupeville has decided to not purchase the AJ Eisenberg airport. We still do not know what the future holds for AJ Eisenberg but we are here to support the community and aviation for all. Whidbey Airpark has been through similar challenging times so we understand the pressure and hope we can be here to help with any transitions. THUNDER RUN 2023 This is the last newsletter before we partake in the Thunder Run on JULY 8th, 2023. If you've been procrastinating and still want ot join us, then now's the time to speak up. If you have no idea what I'm talking about then continue reading! W10 will, again, be participating in this drill (click here for EVAC's flyer) as we prepare for large scale emergencies. There are several different ways to participate in this endeavor. If you are a pilot then signing up to volunteer to fly food donations is one way to get involved, but there are also a lot of other ways to participate in this event. We also need ground crew to help unload the donations, prepare it in an organized way for Good Cheer and help load it into the Good Cheer truck. We will also need individuals watching for any safety concerns. If you are a HAM operator then there is a special spot for your skills too. All volunteers from Island County will need to register with the county. Just click HERE for the form. You are not required to be a CERT volunteer to participate, but you do need to attend an aviation familiarization class. If you missed the mandatory training, please let us know at [email protected]. Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club Scarlett is back and fresh out of annual. She has new rudder pedals, new flap rollers and a new spinner back plate. Tip from the instructor: don't push on the spinner when moving or preflighting Scarlett. Once Scarlett returned, she picked up right where she left off with a lot of activity and students. Hello, Friends and Family of W10! We hope everyone is getting the chance to stretch the wings out and enjoy the weather. It was a bit of a spontaneous decision and it took 3 planes but our Aerospace and Construction crews were able to go for lunch on a sunny Friday afternoon at the Spruce Goose at Jefferson County airport (0S9). I look forward to more of these types of Fridays. Saturday Social @ W10 Be sure to come out this Saturday, June 3rd at 10 am to Seabiscuit bakery for some yummy treats, coffee and good conversations with fellow aviators. W10 Political Update Crawford Road has the attention of the county! Even though we only asked for 1/4 mile, they are looking into a means of extending the road so that it reaches the businesses/airport and therefore making in more likely to be eligible for different funding opportunities. With this change in scope we are wanting feedback from the community as to whether or not folks still support the county taking over the entire gravel part of the road beyond just the 1/4 mile we asked for. Your input would be appreciated. Feel free to email us at [email protected] and I can forward on the input to the Middle Crawford Road Association (MCRA). Our attempts at trying to get the commissioners to understand what we are asking for has not been very successful and we are unable to say anything even when it's apparent there is a misunderstanding. Our next plan is to work with David Ison in WSDOT Aviation to set up individual meetings with each of the commissioners to try to explain what we are asking for as well as the urgency behind it. We are also pleased to have had the chance to meet with Jim Blaisdell and Don Meehan last Friday. Jim joined the county's TAC (Transportation Advisory Board) as a citizen representative last March and has been proactively learning more about the challenges the airports face in Island County. Jim is actively persuing getting the county to see a glimpse of the future as it relates to aviation and therefore the importance of protecting the aiports we currently have. We are excited to have Jim speaking up for all the airports at this critical time and appreciate his thouroughness and positive approach. Don Meehan is also a citizen representative for the county's TAC. He's been working hard lately, advocating for the Port of Coupeville to take ownership of AJ Eisneberg with the ultimate goal to keep it open for public use and optimize it's capabilities. Don has worked with the county in many different roles and will hopefully be able to educate us on how best to navigate the complexity of the county but also be an aviation advocate within the TAC as well. THUNDER RUN 2023 Have you signed up for this amazing event yet? JULY 8th, 2023 is the date to save! Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club May Newsletter clarification: Last month we shared the amazing accomplishments Rowen has been making and most recently getting his CFI. As a means of compressing all of his accomplishments I did not make a good transition to his most recent CFI certification and it appears as if he accomplished that at Embrey Riddle. That is not the case. Rowen's CFI rating was accomplished right here at W10 with Scarlett, Fred, and the South Whidbey Flying Club. The Sky's the Limit and the opportunities are endless. If you have been dreaming about learning how to fly then there is no time like the present to have Fred or Rowen help you reach those dreams. We are excited to see several new students starting their adventure with Scarlett. Scarlett just went in for her annual so hopefully all will go well and she'll be back at W10 in the next week or so. If you are interested in aviation and would like to know more about learning to fly or about the South Whidbey Flying Club, contact Fred Lundahl via [email protected]. W10 Projects

Hopefully everyone is rested and ready to have some fun this spring/summer. We are about to do the first mow and it is already May!!!! Usually we start the mowing in March. I am looking forward to all of the upcoming activities and all the potential there is for getting together and building our W10 community. Saturday Social @ W10 Be sure to come out this Saturday, May 6th at 10 am to Seabiscuit bakery for some yummy treats, coffee and good conversations with fellow aviators. W10 Political Update The surrounding Crawford community, both residential and commercial, will continue to keep pressure on the county to pursue a solution to Crawford Road. There has already been an article released in the paper about the situation as we try to start getting the greater community informed about the issue. With this stage we are encouraging anyone who wants to share their thoughts by writing a letter to the editor. Now that Crawford Road has gained some momentum, We are now actively pursuing getting compatibility protections in place for not just W10, but for all of Island County's airports. We spoke at the commissioner's meeting on Tuesday and will be attending the Planning Commission meeting on Monday as we have been informed that they will be discussing this very issue in the agenda and airports are a huge part of that. We have been told that this meeting is formatted similar to the commissioners meeting where the public is allowed 3 minutes each to speak before the meeting gets started. Sooooooo, if anyone else wants to join us in the BOCC meeting room in Coupeville on Monday at 2pm, then feel free. It is clearly stated in the current Comp Plan that they are obligated to protect airports against incompatible use but there is nothing in place to define that nor nothing in the Planning Department that they have to guide them when a permit application comes in. So far, our experience is that they look at what the zoning allows but the zoning does not take incompatible use into consideration. As you can imagine, as Sky and I have several plans to invest in putting more infrastructure in and improving old infrastructure, if the airport is not protected then our plans will likely need to be modified. We will continue to keep you all updated. THUNDER RUN 2023 The date has been set so check your calendar and sign up to volunteer!!! Long term goal is to get it certified, but we will want to work with it a bit first and ensure it is in a stable hardware/software configuration before we go for certification. Instructors CornerFrom the desk of Dave Bennett, AGI: During a cold, blustery April day, I went browsing through the AOPA’s Air Safety Institute web site. In doing so, I ran across an article in the Safety Highlights section on the Cessna 150/152. The report summarizes accident history with attention to specific systems and characteristics that have affected an airplane model’s safety record. Surprisingly, the C150 was not designed as a trainer, Cessna marketed the overwhelming majority of 150s under the model name “Commuter”. I can personally attest to the C150 being an excellent commuter, having taken her from W10 to KPAE and a short walk to Boeing. It is a great way to avoid long summer ferry commutes! The C150 was produced from 1958 to 1977. The C152 upgrade and replacement of the C150 was produced from 1977 – 1985. As of 2015, there were still 12,0000 Cessna 150s and 152s in service. It turns out that the C150/C152 “simplicity, reliability and handling qualities place them among the world’s most popular training aircraft.” Our own local C150M affectionately known as “Scarlett” is a testament to the 150’s utility as a trainer. As Scarlett is also designed as an “Aerobat”, she is great for spin training as well. Scarlett’s owner, Fred Lundahl - CFI and AOPA Distinguished Flight Instructor, offers instruction to students and pilots here at W10. Fred is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and generous with his time. Reading through the report, I extracted some interesting notes in the summary report on the C150/152:
As loss of control and “sloppy airmanship” during take offs and landings are a significant cause of C150 and C152 accidents, Fred, Scarlett and W10 again offer an excellent training ground to the student pilot. There is no getting away from the constant reminder that the departure and approach paths at W10 are “well defined” by nature. The trees also offer a continuous reminder to maintain the correct airspeed during take off and approach. W10 is a unique training opportunity for pilots of all experience. Hats off to Fred for his role in finding, obtaining and maintaining this wonderful C150M Aerobat and his incredible selfless dedication to turning students into safe pilots! The entire report can be obtained at: https://www.aopa.org/-/media/Files/AOPA/Home/Pilot-Resources/ASI/safety-highlights/Cessna152SafetyHighlights.pdf If you have questions related to aviation, or if you have any suggestions about other educational opportunities, you can reach Dave Bennett at [email protected]. Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club We are so proud and excited to watch Rowen continue to follow his aviation career. Amongst his numerous ratings he earned at Embrey Riddle, he has just obtained his CFI rating, passing on the first attempt!!! Here's what's even cooler! Rowen is currently building his hours and passing his knowledge on to the next generation of aviators here at W10. So as you see Scarlett getting yet another student trained up, it may not be Fred in that left seat. Way to go Rowen!!! We are excited to see the South Whidbey Flying Club growing. More CFI's means more students and more dreams being realized. If you are interested in aviation and would like to know more about learning to fly or about the South Whidbey Flying Club, contact Fred Lundahl via [email protected]. W10 Projects

The nicer weather has certainly been bringing in more activity at W10. Even as I write this I am hearing not only Scarlett flying around but several other planes coming and going. Saturday Social @ W10 Be sure to come out this Saturday, April 1st (really, not a joke) at 10 am to Seabiscuit bakery for some yummy treats, coffee and good conversations with fellow aviators. W10 Political Update Thank you so much for all the letters written and support from the W10 community. This is a slow process so even though public comments ended on March 28th, we won't know too much about whether the project gets added to the county's TIP (Transportation Improvement Program) until October but all the commissioners and the Public Works department, definitely heard our voices without a doubt. The road association will continue to attend meetings and make comments as much as possible to try to get the county to help Crawford road out. As the North end of Crawford Road goes through the process, I will be starting to shift my focus back to trying to get compatibility protections in place for W10, as well as AJ Eisenberg (KOKH) and the Camano Island airfield (13W). I will keep everyone posted with the progress and will let you know when I need help. Cross your fingers that they will just understand that it's the right thing to do as well as keep them compliant with GMA requirements regarding airports. Here's what the county has done right recently - besides asking for protections against incompatible encroachment, we have been trying to get the county to follow FAA notification laws when someone does build nearby. They just recently created an overlay on a map of the areas that would need to comply with the notification laws. We have so far been notified of 2 permit applications and we were able to provide feedback. We will conintue to monitor and see how the process works and to try to provide input regarding safety, noise, compatibility and other considerations for new structures around W10. Welllllllll, I kinda thought we'd be starting to see the warmer temperatures move in and some spring sunshine since we are in March, however, those in charge of our weather apparently had different plans and we are still experiencing snow and cold temperatures. Since it is cold out, we have been taking advantage of ongoing indoor activities like attending the NW Aviation Conference, meeting our newest WSDOT aviaiton resource, David Ison, and advocating politically for protecting W10 from incompatible use and trying to encourage the county to take over the North part of Crawford Road and discourage their plan to build on the South end that will end up cutting off airport zoned properties from the airport. Without the incompatibility protections in place this is literally paving the way for high density development on the southern centerline of W10. The county may also need to hear the voices from friends of W10 as we struggle to save the future of this unique and special airport (we'll keep everyone posted). There is some work to be done to get it up and running now though, and some ongoing upgrades and maintenance so we are looking for some interested volunteers to help with this project. If interested please email [email protected] and we will get a group together and start orientation and planning on this project. We are hoping for some folks in the group with some decent X-Planes experience, but interest is more important if you are willing to learn. (Greg Ridder - are you still interested?) Once it is up and running we will make another announcement for availability. Long term goal is to get it certified, but we will want to work with it a bit first and ensure it is in a stable hardware/software configuration before we go for certification. Instructors Corner From Dave Bennett's desk: Greetings all. I don’t know about you…yes, the snow is beautiful, but this is March. I would like to think about making a flight without worrying about the snow slush clogging my wheel boots or watching my carburetor temperature gauge hang out in the yellow on takeoff. Maybe making an IFR flight that doesn’t involve plummeting into freezing clouds. Take heart, nice weather will be here…eventually. At some point, we will be actively participating in lively discussions involving airplanes, clear blue skies, and temperatures soaring into the 60’s. I got a great email from Eric Hansen who recently attended the WA aviation conference in Puyallup. “One takeaway that you might pass along to students. TRACON representatives were there trying to let pilots know they should call approach when they're below the 3000' shelf of Bravo airspace if they're flying above 2000 feet. They assured me it was legal to fly there at 2900' but expressed their worry about conflicts with landing aircraft that must sometimes fly below 3000 feet. “ This is really good info to pass along. I have also extended that if I am flying above or below class B, C or D airspace, or just outside, at least monitor the tower frequency if you are not with flight following. After all, what else would be better listening? Reading Eric’s note, I was reminded of a quick trip I made to Monroe from W10. I opted to fly north of the KPAE's class D and tuned in the tower to listen. I was quite surprised to hear my call sign from the tower as I was well outside the class D and not in contact with them. They had someone coming in on the ILS and asked if I would mind doing a 360 to let traffic pass. I of course obliged and he thanked me for monitoring the frequency ! Nice to know we can be a help to someone and it makes the skies a little safer. Blast from the Past at W10 As I heard some unusual plane activity on the field I threw on a jacket and ran out to see what I was hearing. Down at the North end was a Kodiak that let out some passengers and then continued to take off and return and then taxi about halfway up the runway just to taxi back. With the help of our neighbor (and local W10 historian), Lee, it became apparent that they were doing a photo shoot. Lee then was able to share with me another photo shoot that happened many years ago. Does anyone recognize this photo???? We first met him at the WSCAA conference in Leavenworth and shortly thereafter he came up to visit W10. We filled his ears up with our political concerns and how AOPA can continue to support W10. As much as we enjoyed his visit, Brad was also here checking in on Fred and the South Whidbey Flying club. Fred is a volunteer for the ASN (Aviation Safety Network). Great Loss in Our Flight Test and Aviation CommunityI wanted to share a poem in honor of David Newton and Scott Brenneman, our good friend Nate Lachendro and our very own Nathan Precup. "In Memoriam" by William MorecombFor a second you were flying Like you always wanted to Now you’ll fly forever In skies of azure blue We’ll see your smile in every ray Of sunshine after rain And hear the echo of your laughter Over all the pain The world’s a little quieter now The colours have lost their hue The birds are singing softly And our hearts are missing you Each time we see a little cloud Or a rainbow soaring high We’ll think of you and gently Wipe a tear from our eye. Friends and Family of W10, Fall has not only brought a flurry of falling leaves but also a flurry of activity for us. Both Sky and I attended the Washington State Community Airport Association (WSCAA) in mid-October and somehow left Leavenworth as board members. We look forward to continuing to support this fantastic organization and the resources it provides. Continue reading to learn more about the conference this year. We are still in the process of moving the offices to the South end of the field so for a little while longer we will be running back and forth. If you can't seem to find us, give the airport phone number a call 360-321-0510 and we'll do our best to find you. Being that this is November it reminds me to think about how grateful we are for our W10 family. We have been delighted to have so many folks recently volunteer to help with projects. We have been so busy lately that we have not been the greatest in organizing everyone but we have not forgotten about you. Once we get nestled into our new home, we will be able to start brining more folks together to work on projects. We've already had volunteers help with mowing, lawn mower maintenance, cameras, ground school and the South Whidbey Flying Club activity. We appreciate you very much! Instructors Corner We are thrilled to have submissions from both Dave Bennett, AGI and Fred Lundahl, CFI, this time, but at the same time it is a rough subject that hits close to home. As we approach the 2 year anniversary, the NTSB report has been released regarding the accident that occurred at W10 on 11/11/2020. To place the articles in perspective you can read the report from the NTSB by clicking here.As Fred Lundahl mentions in his synopsis, he was also out with a student at the same time and was aware of the weather and environment in which this sad event occurred. To read Fred Lundahl's, CFI, perspective, click here. To provide further technical detail regarding carb ice, Dave Bennett, AGI, has put together a great educational article. Click here to access. W10 continues to send our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of these well-loved pilots. It was a loss to the entire aviation community. At this time of year, especially, we hope this information will be a good reminder to not forget about the possibility of carb ice. If you still have questions regarding carb ice feel free to reach out to Dave Bennett at [email protected] or Fred Lundahl at [email protected] . The information, comradery, and advice that comes from this group is priceless. The first day started off with the traditional updates from WSDOT aviation and all the activities they are doing on behalf of aviation. As they try to look into the future they are encouraging airports to start preparing. WA state has been a leader in aviation and they would like to keep that tradition as new technologies emerge such as electric aircraft. The primary educational presentations were regarding hangar development. Most airports in attendance noted having long hangar waiting lists (with the exception of Gray's Harbor). We are slowly getting more of the timber out of the way in the area of our future hangars. We got to hear some good discussions of the do's and don'ts regarding airport hangars. Building costs and funding options continue to be big challenges for additional hangar development across the region. We also had a huge eye opening presentation about wildlife from Laurence Schafer, USDA. I would like to set up a Taxiway Talk and have Laurence do a presentation. He is a great speaker and the information is fascinating and the USDA needs our help. I will let you know when we can set up a time to do this. One of the other great updates is what our representatives are doing on behalf of aviation. Representative Tom Dent and Senator Jim Honeyford have been doing their best to push pro-aviation legislation through. It initially sounds rough but there was a tax increase on aircraft fuel from 11 cents to 18 cents per gallon, the silver lining is that it is 100% earmarked for the aviation fund and is not allowed to go into the general fund. (That doesn't benefit W10 directly, but it is good that aviation fuel taxes are being used for aviation purposes within the state as that has not always been the case). Ground School @ W10 Ground school is off and running. It is such an awesome sight to see the classroom lit up on Mondays and Thursdays and knowing folks are inside soaking up aviation knowledge from Dave and Tom. We'd like to express our appreciation for Dave and Tom for volunteering their time to share their immense knowledge as well as the students who are taking time out of their lives to learn more about aviation and continue to see where this adventure takes them. Please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] for further information if you would like to attend ground school! Friends and Family of W10, I know our poor plants need a drink but I have to say that I have been enjoying our dry weather this summer. There will be several changes this Fall and we will be doing our best to keep everyone updated on things. The biggest one is that we will be moving our office and our residence to the South end of the field. We are sad to see Roger and Charlotte Duke leave the neighborhood and we extend a warm welcome to them to come back and visit us any time they can. We want to thank the Duke's for their long commitment to W10 and to the community along Crawford road. Roger and Charlotte were our life lines during the process of acquiring the airport and were instrumental in making that transaction happen. We are so grateful for their kindness and the opportunities they have provided us. We will miss you, Roger and Charlotte! We will keep everyone informed of any changes in location of things like the courtesy cars or the fire truck and other assets. For now we can still be found at our regular location and we'll send a notice out when we are officially moved over to the South end. Thank You, Stephens Family W10 sends much appreciation to Ken Stephens (Rowen's father) for his generous gift of this electric bike. It was such a surprise and we are excited to put it to good use here at the airport. I was also able to get a quick update on Rowen and he is working on finishing up his commercial license and he plans to be a CFI at Embry Riddle to build time. How exciting! Instructors Corner From the desk of Dave Bennett, AGI: You have done your preflight, checked the weather, inspected the airplane, checked enroute information, received a briefing (www.1800wxbrief.com), re-checked fuel, TFRs, IMSAFE etc. You are compliant with 14 CFR 91.103 and are familiar with all available information concerning that flight. Your airplane is safe and ready to go. You are safe and ready to go. You have the correct runway, traffic is clear so you and your airplane are safe. What about your passengers ? Oh yes, you have gone through the SAFETY briefing: Seat belts Air vents Fire extinguisher Exit doors Traffic Your questions As a pilot, we are responsible for the safety of all of our passengers, so we are generally pretty good about seat belts, egress, emergency procedures and a lot of good stuff. But what about that passenger that is sitting right next to you ? Does that passenger know they are in reach of all the flight and engine controls on the airplane ? Does that passenger know they have the physical ability to influence the flight ? It is obvious to us pilots, but it may not be to that passenger taking their 1st ride in an airplane. I have heard stories about passenger seats sliding when the airplane pitches up on rotation and the passenger in the right seat instinctively grabs the control wheel. I have had a passenger stretching in flight and pushing on the rudder pedals. I’ve even had a young child grab the wheel and start playing with it ! While we thoroughly brief our passengers on everything we expect them to do, do we give thought to what they might unexpectedly do ? I believe a few moments to brief the right seat passenger on the function of each of the controls is warranted. When you are going through your control check, make sure your passenger is aware of what that “steering wheel” is doing in front of them. Are they aware that while stretching or moving about, it is not ok to lean or push against that wheel ? Turning around with a large bag in their lap, they could easily apply unknowing force against the wheel. Even in 4 place airplanes, it is conceivable that a passenger in front could move to the back (or vice versa) in flight. While not judging the safety of such a maneuver, I think we can all agree that the potential consequences are frightening. With increasing use of autopilots in small airplanes, passenger interference of the flight controls could catch a pilot of guard. Consider having front seat passengers keep their hands in their laps (or sit on their hands) during take off, keep feet flat on the floor and out of the way of the rudder pedals. Make sure their feet are not resting on the brake tabs. Flights can be long and people need to shift around to stay comfortable. We as pilots just need to make sure we all stay safe and comfortable. Make sure your passenger is also aware of other controls so as to not mistake the mixture knob for the cabin heat…anyway, you get the picture. A few minutes of extra briefing of the right seat passenger is will not only help your passenger feel more involved, it will raise awareness so they can be a safer passenger. We may never know how many accidents were caused by PIT (Passenger Induce Turbulence), but my bet is that there are a least a few incidents that could have been avoided. If you have questions related to aviation, or if you have any suggestions about other educational opportunities, you can reach Dave Bennett at [email protected]. Congratulations Gabe for successfully completing your first solo trip with Scarlett! Keep up the hard work. Instructors Corner Here's another great tidbit to ponder from the desk of Dave Bennett, AGI. Click Here for Dave's quick thoughts on quarterly tailwinds. If you have questions related to aviation, or if you have any suggestions about other educational opportunities, you can reach Dave Bennett at [email protected]. Ground School Resumes @ W10Get ready, set some time aside, and join the 2022 Fall session of Ground school taught by our very own Dave Bennett, AGI. We are going to start getting the roster going but at this point we just need to get an idea of how many are interested and get you on a distribution list to continue to send information in preparation for this Fall session. Please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] and let us know if you want to get a strong base of aviation knowledge whether you want to prep for you PPL written test or just learn more about general aviation. GA in the News For those of you that recall, W10 participated in an international training exercise using GA volunteers on June 18th that was called the "Thunder Run". It was a great experience for all that participated. Our scenario at the time was assuming our region was hit by a large earthquake. Earthquakes are not the only scenario where GA resources can make a huge difference and save lives. Check out this article out of the Ukraine and the critical role that GA volunteers from around the world are participating. Click Hereto read the article. Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club If you too, want to be in our local newsletter and get your Private Pilot's License then be sure to check in with Fred to find out how to become a pilot. Throughout these fabulous summer days, you are likely to see a local celebrity breezing through the skies. Keep an eye out for a little Cessna 150, named Scarlett, taking off with a future pilot in the left seat. Scarlett is a dream maker, career builder, and a source of pure joy for many people so W10 feels privileged to be called her home. Of course, what is Scarlett without Fred Lundahl, founder of the South Whidbey Flying Club. If you are interested in aviation and would like to know more about learning to fly or about the South Whidbey Flying Club, contact Fred Lundahl via [email protected]. W10 Projects
