July 2023

Hello, Friends and Family of W10!
Is it really time for July to begin?    Our summer months seem to fly by so quickly.  There is so much to do around the field when the weather is nice.  It's certainly slow going but we took a weekend to continue clearing the large stumps out of the area where the future FBO is going.  In order to do this you may notice a couple new pieces of equipment that is making W10 it's new home.  Both came from the 1980's but the large new Catepillar excavator and the John Deere bulldozer will be helping with the dirt moving and land clearing as well as any other unusual project that needs done around here.
As a reminder, the firepits are open if you want to camp or just have a picnic while watching planes come and go.

Saturday Social @ W10
This Saturday, July 1st, is our monthly social. For those that can make it, we'll meet at 10am at Seabiscuit Bakery.  We look forward to seeing you!

W10 Political Update
Between holidays and traveling there is not much new to report. We will still try to pursue our quest for airport protections from incompatible use as best as we can.
For those of you that may not have heard, the Port of Coupeville has decided to not purchase the AJ Eisenberg airport.  We still do not know what the future holds for AJ Eisenberg but we are here to support the community and aviation for all.  Whidbey Airpark has been through similar challenging times so we understand the pressure and hope we can be here to help with any transitions.

THUNDER RUN 2023

This is the last newsletter before we partake in the Thunder Run on JULY 8th, 2023.
If you've been procrastinating and still want ot join us, then now's the time to speak up.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about then continue reading!

W10 will, again, be participating in this drill (click here for EVAC's flyer) as we prepare for large scale emergencies.  There are several different ways to participate in this endeavor.  If you are a pilot then signing up to volunteer to fly food donations is one way to get involved, but there are also a lot of other ways to participate in this event.  We also need ground crew to help unload the donations, prepare it in an organized way for Good Cheer and help load it into the Good Cheer truck.  We will also need individuals watching for any safety concerns.  If you are a HAM operator then there is a special spot for your skills too.

All volunteers from Island County will need to register with the county.  Just click HERE for the form.
You are not required to be a CERT volunteer to participate, but you do need to attend an aviation familiarization class.  If you missed the mandatory training, please let us know at [email protected].

Pilots: please click HERE to email your interest to volunteer for the Thunder Run.  There are 4 emails attached to the link.  Sky Terry with EVAC, Ron Conlin with Island County Department of Emergency Management, Doug Weller, and W10.  When you email there are a few details that Sky Terry and Doug Weller will need to know :,
  • Name
  • Tail Number
  • Plane type
  • weight capacity
  • when you will be able to arrive at the airport
  • home base
  • cell phone #
  • IFR certification or other special capabilities

Instructors CornerThank you Dave Bennett, for leading the training for our ground crew volunteers at AJ Eisenberg and at Whidbey Airpark.  Over a dozen more people are now familiar with how to operate safely around an airport and airplanes.

If you have questions related to aviation, or if you have any suggestions about other educational opportunities, you can reach Dave Bennett at [email protected].
Ground School @ W10
Ground school is held based on interest by enough potential students.  Please let us know if you are interested in taking ground school.  Ongoing discussions are in the works regarding other possible class offerings.  Feel free to share your ideas and interests.

Please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] for further information or if you would like to attend ground school!
Proceeds go directly to Whidbey Airpark (W10) to help cover maintenance, improvements, future programs, and facilities.
Scarlett and the South Whidbey Flying Club
Scarlett is back and fresh out of annual.  She has new rudder pedals, new flap rollers and a new spinner back plate.  Tip from the instructor: don't push on the spinner when moving or preflighting Scarlett.
Once Scarlett returned, she picked up right where she left off with a lot of activity and students.

If you are interested in aviation and would like to know more about learning to fly or about the South Whidbey Flying Club, contact Fred Lundahl via [email protected].
