Saturday Social It's already time for our Saturday Social at The Muk. Join us at 10am this Saturday for some coffee and breakfast with fellow aviation enthusiasts. Private Pilot Ground School Due to schedules and availability Ground School had a couple week recess but everyone is back at it. We still have not determined when the next session will begin but interest is already growing and we will make that announcement when the time is right. If you have any questions please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] or Tara or Sky Rudolph at W10 via email at [email protected] or call us at 360-321-0510. Taxiway Talks
More information to come..... Sonex Takes It's First Flight! Rick and his Sonex lifted off effortlessly during their maiden flight out of W10. Congratulations on your success and we are so excited to see the dedication and hard work pay off. You are an inspiration to us all! For anyone else who may be interested in building their own plane like Rick, there is an EAA SportAir Workshop happening on October 26-27th, 2019 at the Museum of Flight Restoration Facility, Paine Field. They say the class sizes are limited so you need to enroll at EAA.org/Seattle or call 1-800-967-5746. The classes offered in Seattle appear to be Fabric Covering, Electrical & Avionics and Composite. Based on what I can tell each class is a 2 day workshop so you have to pick one and it costs $319. Congratulations, Eric!!! We are pleased to announce that Eric Hansen obtained his PPL this month! Starting from scratch with Scarlett and Fred, Eric worked his way through all the requirements and testing and is now a Private Pilot. Great work, Eric! There are a few more of Scarlett and Fred's students that are gearing up to take their tests so good luck to you all!!!! W10 Swag We are starting to get some W10 swag available. Currently there are Cinch Bags ($15) and W10 oval stickers ($5) available so you can represent your favorite little airport in the woods. All proceeds go towards the airport to help with maintenance and improvement projects.

So many W10 firsts occurred this month, can't wait for more. Saturday Social Our Saturday Social at The Muk is this (first) Saturday September 7th at 10am. Take a break from all those Saturday chores for some coffee, breakfast and aviation chatter. Private Pilot Ground School Ground school is off and running. We are in the 4th week already of this first session and learning away. If you missed this session, don't worry, another session is on the horizon so stay tuned for further information. In the meantime if you have any questions please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] or Tara or Sky Rudolph at W10 via email at [email protected] or call us at 360-321-0510. Taxiway Talks The first of many Taxiway Talks occurred on August 18th with Peter Morton giving a fabulous presentation on the pilot shortage. There is some upcoming travel plans that have prevented us from setting the date for the next Taxiway Talk but stay tuned for that announcement. Collapsible Classroom If you haven't had a chance to see the newest W10 structure then be sure to take a peak at the new classroom next to the kiosk. This arrived folded up to about 30" wide, and folded out origami-style to a 16' width. It was fun to unfold a building. To our knowledge, this is the first of these buildings in WA. It has served us well in hosting ground school and the Young Eagles event so far and we plan on utilizing it for other airport meeting needs. Young Eagles Event It was a bit of short notice but with 2 volunteer pilots, Peter Morton and Dave Bennett, along with Tom Wayne holding down the fort (and paperwork), W10 hosted our first Young Eagles event that turned out fantastic. Many (17 I think) kids and parents alike were all smiles as they got to experience the joy of riding in a GA plane. Special thanks to Rick for letting the kids crawl around his kit plane, and to Scott for showing off the helicopter he had flown in for the weekend. We plan on hosting more of these events and would love to get even more pilots to volunteer at our next event. Camping The airport camp sites are seeing good use this summer, and we remind everyone that under-wing camping is available. We even had our first helicopter camper in this month. Not being 'helicopter people' is this considered under-rotor camping? W10 Feel Good Story In late July or early August we were contacted by a gentleman from New Zealand who was planning on being in the area at the end of August for a wedding. He had asked if anyone was willing to give him and his father a ride to see the area. They are both pilots in New Zealand and were looking forward to seeing the area from their most favorite perspective on their first visit to Whidbey Island. Many Thanks to Dave Bennett who volunteered to make this special request happen. Everyone had a great time. Sonex Gets Its Certificate! The DAR was out today to inspect and issue an airworthiness certificate for Rick's Sonex! Way to go! We look forward to seeing that zip around the airport (but will understand if the first flight ends up being out of Arlington). There is still good flying weather left in the summer. We hope you are all able to get out and enjoy it. Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph e-mail: [email protected] Summer is in full swing here at W10! We have been making headway on many projects around the field but it's been especially fun for us to observe all the aviation activity going on. Saturday Social Don't forget that our Saturday Social at The Muk is this Saturday August 3rd at 10am. Grab some coffee and some grub and just hang out with fellow aviation enthusiasts. And if the weather is nice, and there is interest, maybe we will go for a flight afterwards? Private Pilot Ground School(!) Need to get ready to pass your FAA written exam? Are you a frequent GA passenger that is just curious about what's happening in the background of your flight or want to know more in the event of an emergency? Are you a pilot searching for a bit of updated information or a refresher? Then you need to join us starting August 6th for Ground School. This is a 10 week course being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm - 8pm. Discount available for South Whidbey Flying Club members. If you need more information please contact Dave Bennett at [email protected] or Tara or Sky Rudolph at W10 via email at [email protected] or call us at 360-321-0510. This is coming up quick so don't delay in getting your questions answered. Taxiway Talks We are excited to announce the first of many Taxiway Talks here at W10. Join us at the fire pit on the West side of the field on Sunday August 18th at 12 noon for some campfire weenie roasting and discussion. Our very first guest speaker is Peter Morton. View a flyer for a bio on Peter Morton and why this would be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon here. Hot dogs, buns, water (still and sparkling), chips and coffee provided. We will, again, look into seeing if we can acquire WINGS credit for these events....stay tuned for that. Little Big Fest This weekend (August 2-4) is Little BIG Fest at the Porter Public House on the south end of the field. For more information and a schedule of events check out www.LittleBIGFest.org. Pilots are welcome to camp under wing and the campsite on the east side of the runway is now equipped with a fire pit for use while camping. The west side tie down area and fire pit are also available. Student Solo! Congratulations Byron on your first solo flight!!! We look forward to seeing you soaring around in those blue skies. Way to go! W10 Garden Club The last W10 Garden Club was a great success, and we appreciate greatly those that came out to help. We would also like to make a shout out to QuickSilver Construction that provided some machinery to assist in the effort. We are working on plans for the next W10 Garden Club activity, and will announce that when we are ready.
We hope to see you out at some of these events, and out flying while the weather is nice. Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph e-mail: [email protected] Hello from W10 and Welcome to Summer! Saturday Social The next Saturday Social at The Muk is Saturday July 6th at 10am. Nothing formal planned, but there will probably be some brainstorming about Dave's new upcoming ground school. And if the weather is nice, and there is interest, maybe we will go for a flight afterwards? Wings Credit If you were present for the NAS Whidbey controller presentation in May, Carl Lee has done the legwork to get you FAA WINGS credit for that. (And if you aren't familiar with the WINGS program, you can read up on it here: https://www.faasafety.gov/WINGS/pppinfo/default.aspx. It may just get you out of you next flight review.) If you want credit e-mail us your WINGS account email address (if you have one) or your name and zip code if you don't have an account already. Private Pilot Ground School(!) We are thrilled to announce that Dave Bennett recently received his Ground School Instructor certification (way to go Dave!!!), and is gearing up to start his first class. He is thinking twice a week for two hours each for 10 weeks, which will provide 40 hours of instruction. Maybe Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm - 8pm starting mid-July? Nothing is set in stone just yet, and may depend on student interest/availability. If you are interested, please e-mail us, and we can start to coordinate on the details. Ground School Help Wanted: Dave is interested in bringing in some people with unique perspectives, backgrounds, and stories that may be relevant and interesting to budding pilots. It can be specific instruction on a particular topic, or something of general interest outside the bounds of the normal coursework. If you think you may have something to contribute, again, let us know and we can discuss the details. Some of these discussions of more general interest may be done before/after the normal class time and open to the public as well. This should be fun, and we are looking forward to supporting Dave on this, and greatly appreciate the time that he has already put in, and is committing for the class, to share his passion for aviation. Thanks Dave! W10 Garden Club We were out for a couple weeks this month, so are going to try to sneak in a June work party still this coming Sunday, June 30. I think that the focus of this months efforts will be on the cleanup of the east side in the area of the wind sock. We had done some clearing of that area to get the wind sock out from the trees during our first work party (as I am sure many of you will recall), but there are some piles of logs and brush that were left behind that we haven't got around to dealing with. With a little help, we can get that cleared out, and then can do a little grading to make that more usable, and ensure that there are no hazards there should anyone veer off into the grass in that area. Bring some gloves, and eye protection, and meet us on the field at 10am. We will lite up the fire pit (as long as recreational fires are still allowed this weekend - and the BBQ if they are not) and roast some hot dogs for lunch. First Sonex Taxi Test! It has been fun watching Rick build his Sonex in his hangar directly across from our office. He has been reluctant to project any dates for completion, but we did look out recently to see some taxi tests. Although we know that much work surely remains, it is looking great, and was exciting to see moving under its own power. Way to go Rick!
We hope everyone is out enjoying the weather, and getting some flying in (the days will only be getting shorter from here). Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph e-mail: [email protected] Hello from W10 and Happy Spring! Saturday Social Sorry for the late notice, but the monthly Saturday Social at The Muk is tomorrow Saturday June 1st at 10am. Nothing formal planned, just come by and hang out with your fellow aviators. Save the Date NAS Whidbey Open House. NAS Whidbey is having an Open House on June 22nd. If there are a couple of people interested in going, we can arrange a carpool. AC1 Ryan Leonard who talked to us in April has offered a special tour for W10 folks of the control tower. Please RSVP with us, and we will get names to him prior to the event and coordinate. B-17 at Skagit The Commemorative Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress named “Sentimental Journey “ will be visiting the Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington, WA from: Monday, June 24th, 2019 (arrival time approximately 12:00 p.m.) through end of day Sunday June 30th, 2019. Mowing Season and Passport Program This lovely warm weather means mowing season is in full swing. Don’t be surprised if you see us riding around trying to keep the weeds under control. The kiosk has also made some strong headway this past week. Just a little trim work (and a second coat of paint) and we will call it finished soon, and start the work of posting information and keeping the bulletin board updated inside. The passport stamp is in the mailbox located inside in case anyone is looking for it. We have been getting great feedback from new visitors that are coming into W10 because of the Passport Program, and are having fun with it. We encourage folks to get out and explore the other airports in the state to see what they have to offer as well. www.FlyWashington.org Gratitude to the W10 Community We are relieved to have heard from the surviving passenger of the tragic accident that occurred in January. She is still healing but is planning on getting back to work soon. She wanted to thank the W10 community for the support. We continue to wish her the best. Scarlett Hats The red Cessna 150 named Scarlett that is often seen doing flying training duty at W10 with the South Whidbey Flying Club has a fundraiser in progress. A cartoon version of Scarlett can now be found on caps. Check in with Fred if you would like one of these one-of-a-kind caps and support the flying club at the same time! Garden Club Last months 'garden club' was great. We removed a bunch of Scotch Broom from the field, and then fired up the fire pit, cooked some hot dogs, and Dave gave some airplane rides. Thanks to those that came out. We will do another something in June, but we will announce the details later. Expect it to be a Sunday later in the month. Up to our eyeballs in Scotch Broom! WSDOT Aircraft Registration Reminder Washington State Department of Transportation, Aviation Devision requested that we forward the following to our flying community here, regarding your aircraft registration: Just a friendly reminder from WSDOT regarding aircraft registration. Registration or exemptions were due by January 1, 2019. WSDOT Aviation Division wants to help prevent penalties and outstanding accounts going to a collection agency. Penalties are applied when an account is 60 days past due. Outstanding accounts are referred to collections at the 90 day mark. For any questions regarding your aircraft registration, please contact Tracy Paul, WSDOT Aviation Division at 360-709-8015 or [email protected]. Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph It is great to see the long days return, with clear skies and lots of people out enjoying their airplanes!
Saturday Social First off, a reminder that our monthly Saturday Social at The Muk is this coming Saturday May 4th at 10am. Nothing formal planned, just come by and hang out with your fellow aviators. If there is interest and the weather is good, maybe we will go for a flight together afterwards? We have been out of town for the last few, so are looking forward to seeing you all and catching up with the latest local news. Last month's Social with AC1 Ryan Leonard from NAS Whidbey was great, and we truly appreciate his attendance. A copy of the presentation he gave can be found here: NAS Whidbey Presentation April 2019 Carl Lee is going to see if he can get FAA Wings credit for those who participated in that presentation. If you were there, and want to be sure to get credit, let us know and we will keep you in the loop. (Thanks Carl for looking into this for us!) W10 "Gardening Club" - Sunday May 5 We are often asked if there are projects around the field that people can help with. We have a long list in fact, with great variety of skill sets from mechanical, to electrical, to research/planning. If you have an interest, let us know and we can try to find a project that is both fun for you, and beneficial to the airport. Starting in May though, we are going to try to organize some small outdoor work parties for anyone that wants to come out and get their hands dirty for a couple hours. The "Gardening Club" is a bit tongue-in-cheek as it will often involve heavy machinery. =) This month, we figured we would start with something light and easy(ish), with removal of the invasive Scotch broom from the field. Bring some gloves, and if you have a shovel or loppers (and any great tips for removal) and join us down on the runway at 10am this Sunday. We may do some raking/clearing/cleaning of the campsite if the Scotch broom comes out quickly. All for now. Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph Saturday Social
First off, a reminder that our monthly Saturday Social at The Muk is this coming Saturday April 6th at 10am. We expect to have a controller from NAS Whidbey join us this month to talk about and answer any questions about operation in their airspace. That should be interesting, and we appreciate their time in coming down to join us. W10 Information Booth We are building a small information booth now, that we hope to have finished soon. For the near-term, this will be located in front of the red shipping containers at the north end of the field, and we will start populating it with information for locals and visitors. Runway Condition Survey WSDOT has released their most recent airport pavement condition report. You can review all of the details and many summary plots from their website here or read the report directly here. We are happy to report that the runway pavement condition here at W10 scored a 91%. This puts us in the top 10 in the state(!) and should mean many years of continued service with routine maintenance. The report is not all rosy though, and indicates that the state airport infrastructure will need significant investment in the coming years to remain effective. You can see a report on this study from Q13 here. It is also interesting to note that according to the study:
Sky and Tara Rudolph Saturday Social
First off, a reminder that our monthly Saturday Social at The Muk is this coming Saturday March 2nd at 10am. Although we are travelling, so can't make it ourselves, it's not really about us. Please come out, talk airplanes with your fellow pilots, and let us know what we missed. Last Month's Saturday Social Last month we had a great turnout at our monthly social so thank you to everyone who attended. We had the High School Aviation Club speak about what they were doing as well as an impromptu talk on helicopters, and Boeing Field operations. For those that missed it, Fred presented the Aviation Club with a Radio Controlled P51 that was donated by the wife of Captain Michael A. Clinkscales. Captain Clinkscales had a long history and passion with aviation and wanted to rekindle this passion but passed away unexpectedly before he had the chance to. We send our deepest sympathies to his wife and we hope to continue to honor him by treasuring the items he has left behind. Skiing at W10 - No Lift Pass Required It is hard to believe that February is almost over, and it seems like much of the month was spent in challenging weather (although offered some locals an opportunity to try out a new pair of skis - check our FB page for the video). We are looking forward to springtime as we have many projects that we would like to make progress on. Of course, we’ll keep you all informed when volunteers are needed. Congratulations Aaron Simpson! Now for the exciting news closer to home—we want to send a HUGE congratulations to Aaron Simpson for getting hired on by Horizon Air. Aaron began his aviation career right here at W10 with Fred Lundahl (CFI) and Scarlett (Cessna 150). Aaron has worked hard to fuel his passion and it’s now paying off. We are excited to for Aaron as he continues to reach for the skies and can’t wait to see what his future holds. Fly Washington The NW Aviation Conference was this past weekend and we got the newest information from WSDOT with regards to the Fly Washington Passport Program they are launching. The official launch date is now April 1st (they made clear that this is not a hoax). W10 has our stamp ready to go. For now, the mailbox that will house the stamp will be up near the office on the West side just up the hill from the red shipping containers. I tried to get some of the passports but they only ran a small batch of them so far and only certain airports are able to disperse them. The list of airports with the books and all the other information about the program can be found on their website: www.flywashington.org. The passport booklets are very similar to a real passport and done up very nicely. Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to be a pilot to participate and it is not a requirement to have to “fly” into the airport. Driving is okay but they encourage you to get to know the airport a bit while you are there in case you want to fly there in the future. Some airports that are participating are a bit more challenging to get into *cough* W10 *cough* and SAFETY should be on the top of everyone’s list. The program is always open to anyone or business that would like to be a sponsor too. 2019 WSDOT Airport Reference Guides, Hot Off the Press WSDOT also has printed up some new 2019 WA State Airport Reference Guides. I again, tried to pick a bunch of them up to have available here at the airport but they could not agree to give me more than 1 for the time being. The printing of these booklets is getting very costly and they are brain-storming on ideas about how to continue to provide this resource. It would not be surprising if they need to be purchased in the future. We are going to try to obtain more copies but we need to pick them up in Olympia at WSDOT’s office. We will be trying to arrange this, but in the meantime feel free to come by the office to look at the copy we do have and we can make copies of anything you need. The data can also be downloaded/printed from their web site. FATPNW - Your flying friends in the NW FATPNW is also growing into a fantastic aviation group. There are now nearly 10,000 members. Membership is free although if you join the premium program for an annual fee there are many discounts available to you from a large variety of sponsors. They have several events throughout the year for folks to participate in including BBQ’s and camping. They have been working on getting a scholarship program together and they have finally gotten to the point to where they were able to distribute their first set of scholarships to help individuals as they pursue their education in aviation. Don't forget to register WSDOT Aviation wanted to send out a reminder to be sure to get your plane’s tail number(s) registered with them or file for your exemption. renewal deadline was January 1st. If you have any questions or concerns with regards to your aircraft registration they would like you to contact Tracy Paul with the WSDOT Aviation Division at 360-709-8015 or [email protected]. NOTAM on NOTAMS: Know your NOTAM's people! WSDOT and the FAA have also asked us to let you know that a new FAA Primer on NOTAM's is now available. You are encouraged to brush up. It is quite, um, detailed? You should be able to find the answer to any question you do or don't have. Crew Car!!! Whaaat?!?! Last but not least, W10 is pleased to announce we now have a courtesy car available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It’s a white 1996 Ford Taurus (icon of the 90's automotive heyday, and now you can drive one for yourself!). We are still in the process of setting up the logistics like where and how to borrow it and we have not gotten the W10 decals on it yet but we should have those details along with a bit of maintenance done in the very near future. Whoo-Hoo! Blue Skies! Sky and Tara Rudolph Humble Greetings from W10.
After a rocky January we are looking forward to a better 2019. We are glad to report that our friend, Donna, who survived the accident on January 12th is home and recovering. We continue to wish her the best and hope she continues to have a speedy recovery. We want to take this opportunity to introduce John Lloyd. You may see him around the airport helping us in many capacities but our main goal is to keep progress going on our plans to get hangars in place as well as all of our other projects we have planned. We are hoping that John will help us keep the momentum going even when we are traveling for the Flight Test business. This coming Saturday, February 2nd will be the monthly Saturday Social at the Mukilteo Coffee Roasters. In addition to the usual casual discussions, we are pleased to welcome the South Whidbey High School Aviation Club this month, to tell us more about their club and what they are doing. We hope you can make it! On a very happy note we are excited to share that our very own Fred Lundahl was awarded an AOPA 2018 Distinguished Flight Instructor Award. We are very proud of Fred's dedication to aviation and inspiring so many others to share in his passion. We also wanted to thank Eric Hanson for getting frustrated at not being able to see his flaps and thus motivating and assisting us make the office flight simulator even cooler by adding side screens so you can easily look out the windows. =) We appreciate all of your help! We look forward to seeing you on Saturday! Sky and Tara Rudolph Dear Friends of W10,
As we say goodbye to 2018 and look upon the opportunities that await us in 2019 we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for being a part of the W10 community. We are thankful for those that have sacrificed their time to help with projects around the field and for those that take time out on a Saturday to meet up for a social gathering. We appreciate our locally based pilots that help offset a bit of the cost to maintain an airfield and for the occasional transient who chips in when staying overnight. We are very grateful for the pilots (primarily Dave Bennett) that is willing to fill up their seats when we have a fly-out. We are blessed that Fred Lundahl has such a passion for getting people up in the air that he is willing to be our local CFI (Fred had 6 students solo in 2018). We have enjoyed getting the opportunity to meet so many new folks as well as continuing to keep in touch with all of our local pilots. We just can't say enough about the fantastic encouragement we have received as we continue to build this community. For those that may not know yet we have some new tie downs located on the west side of the field near the red shipping containers. As with everything here, it was a learning experience, but we feel that we have a method figured out, and will be putting in more around the field as time permits. We will continue our Saturday social on the first Saturday of the month into 2019. The next one will be THIS SATURDAY, January 5th at 10am at the Mukilteo Coffee Roasters. We hope to see anyone that can make it. So as we look forward to 2019 what are our near(ish)-term goals for W10?
